Staying Balanced While Riding the Cycle
Like other service providers, South Florida law firms are subject to the ups and downs of the region’s business cycle. After surviving the worst economic downturn in the past 75 years, many firms have shifted into a growth mode.
In South Florida Legal Guide’s 2014 annual edition, you’ll read about five Prominent Law Firms – small, midsize and national – that are adding new attorneys, expanding their practice areas and opening new offices. It’s quite a change from the gloomy years of the recent past, when bankruptcies and real estate workouts were virtually the only growth sectors in the legal profession.
But as law firms, financial institutions and accounting firms move into the New Year, it’s vital to maintain the fiscal discipline of the past. Certainly, one of the big lessons of the boom-bust cycle is the importance of maintaining a strong revenue flow and avoiding the financial risks that can occur when growth spins out of control. In other words, both professionals and their firms need to stay balanced as they take advantage of the opportunities presented by a gradually improving economy.
In this issue, we are also profiling six of our most Distinguished Attorneys, including several former presidents of The Florida Bar. For me, it is always a pleasure to interview these notable attorneys and learn about their professional careers, personal passions, and remarkable contributions to legal, civic and humanitarian organizations.
This edition also features our annual lists of Top Lawyers, Top Law Firms, Top Up & Comers and Top CPAs and Financial Professionals.
I would also like to direct you to the informative articles in our Professional Forum, which have been written by leading professionals on various aspects of law, finance and business. Finally, we are including in-depth Profiles of a select group of our top professionals.
All of us at South Florida Legal Guide would like to express our thanks to our readers, contributors and advertisers for your support of our growing family of publications. Enjoy this issue!
